RULES

  • Players - 4 players maximum per team.   Age classification is based on the oldest person on the team through high school.

  • Registered Players - All players listed on the registered roster will be eligible to play in the tournament.  There will be no more than 4 players per roster.  Players may be added and changed by the captain online until registration closes.  Rosters can be changed up to the first game being played, then they become set.  Players that play in a game that are not on the roster or added at registration will cause a disqualification of the team in the game in which they played.

  • Number of Players - All games must start with 3 players per team at official game time.  There will be no grace period.  Failure to field 3 players will result in forfeiture of the game.  There must be a minimum of 2 players available at the end of the game.  Failure to provide 2 players will result in forfeiture of the game.

  • Authorized Equipment or Apparel - We reserve the right to refuse any type of equipment or apparel that is deemed dangerous or inappropriate.

  • Scoring - Games will be played to 21 points or 25 minutes, whichever comes first.  All baskets outside the 3-point arc are worth 2 points and inside the arc are worth 1 point.  There will be a change of possession after each score or free-throw attempt.  The winning team is the first team to reach 21 points and you do NOT need to win by 2 points.

    • If both teams are under 21 points when time expires, the team with the most points is declared the winner.

    • TIE - If there is a tie at the end of regulation, there will be a coin toss that decides which team gets first possession.  The team with the possession arrow gets to call the toss.  The first team to score 3 points wins.  There is a 4-minute maximum time limit.  The team ahead after 4 minutes is the winner.  If the game is still tied after 4 minutes, the coin toss for first possession will take place and the game goes to sudden death.  The first team to score is declared the winner.  You do not have to be ahead by 2 points to win the game.

  • Referees - All games will be refereed by an official.  Referees are responsible for making the calls of all 2-point shots and to maintain decorum on the court.  It is the referees responsibility to make sure the scoreboard is accurate and time is kept for each game.

  • Fouls - All CALLED fouls will result in 1 free-throw shot, except in successful shot attempts.  In the event of a successful shot attempt, the score will count and possession will be exchanged.  There are no "And-1" plays (foul on a made shot plus a free-throw).  Fouls on 2-point shots will result in 2 free-throw attempts.

  • Technical/Intentional/Flagrant Fouls - If any of these types of fouls are called by the referee, they all will result in 1 point and possession to the opposing team.  Flagrant fouls will result in the player being expelled from the game and possibly the remainder of the tournament if deemed necessary by the referee or tournament staff.

  • Free Throws - When a foul is called, the player who gets fouled will be issued one free-throw.  After the attempt the ball will change possession to the other team.  All other players must remain behind the 2-point arc and behind the shooter.  There will be no disrupting the free-throw shooter.

  • Stalling - Stalling is prohibited and is defined as a method in which an offensive team is not making an attempt to score.  If it is determined by the referee or court monitor that a lack of effort is being made by the offensive team to score in  an attempt to run the clock out, a warning will be issued.  If a team continues to "stall", a technical foul will be issued.

  • Dunking - Dunking is not allowed at any time and will be considered an unsportsmanlike act and will result in a technical foul.  There is also no dunking during warmups on any court.  If a player is caught dunking during warmups, a warning will be issued.  If the dunking continues, the player may be suspended for a game or expelled from the tournament completely.

  • Time Out - Each team will be issued (1) one-minute timeout per game.  The game clock will be stopped during the timeout.

  • Coin Toss - There will be a coin toss at the beginning of each game.  The top team on the bracket will make the call (heads or tails) and the winner will receive first possession.

  • Jump Ball - The first jump ball will be directed to the loser of the coin toss and will alternate back and forth from that point on.

  • Clearing the Ball/Taking it Back - Players must clear the ball behind the "Check Line".  All air balls rebounded by the defensive team must be cleared behind the "Check Line".  It is considered clearing the ball if at least 1 foot is cleared past the line.  If the ball is not cleared and a basket is scored, the basket will not count and will result in a change of possession.

  • Checking the Ball - When there has been a score and change of possession, the receiving team must check the ball at the check line with the opposing player before the ball is put in play.

    • The defender will allow a 3-foot cushion for the player to inbound the ball.

    • The inbounding player cannot move their feet and must keep one foot planted before he/she inbounds the ball.

    • A team has 5 seconds to inbound the ball.  If it takes more than 5 seconds to inbound the ball, a violation will be called and will result in a change of possession.

    • Players cannot deny inbound passes to the wing behind the free-throw line.  Inbound passes to the interior can be defended and if intercepted, play will be continued as a turnover and must be cleared behind the check line before a shot can be taken.

  • Stealing - 3rd/4th/5th grade players can steal passes and get steals off the dribble.  They are not allowed to "grab at" or "rip" the ball out of opponents hands.

  • Police/Fire - For participation in the police/fire divisions, participants must all be active at their respective department.  All participants must be from the same organization in order to participate.

FAQ

When does registration end?

Registration is open until Monday, August 13th at 11:59 pm.  If you have trouble with registration, email Kevin at KevinN@EmeraldDowns.com.

What division should I register for?

Divisions are set up for youth participants to sign up for the division of the grade that they just completed in June 2017.  If you just graduated high school, you can choose to play in the high school or college division.  Anyone is eligible to sign up for the elite division and if all your participants are under 6' tall, you may sign up for the 6' and under division.

What do I do if I signed up for the wrong division?

If you signed up for the wrong division, do not panic.  We are here to help get you in the correct division to maximize your experience at the Jim Marsh Classic.  If you find yourself in the wrong division, be sure to email Kevin at KevinN@EmeraldDowns.com and get your division changed.  If you wait until the day of the tournament, it is too late to adjust and you will have to play in the wrong division, unfortunately.

How many players can be on a team?

Each team can consist of 3 or 4 players.  If a team starts the game with 3 players and one gets hurt or is unable to play for any reason, then that team must play with 2 players.  Players can be added the day of the event before their first game but we recommend adding the player ahead of time to ensure all information is accurate.  A player may only be registered for one team and cannot switch teams once the tournament has started.  Each team costs $120 to register, regardless if there are 3 or 4 players.

What if I put in the wrong coaches name?

The coaches box in our registration form has no impact on your team.  This box is only there so that we have a person to email the brackets to when they are posted.  As long as you put a good point of contact in this box, it does not have to be the actual coaches name.
